Pablo Larrazabal is a 31 year old Spanish golfer, who’s climbed up the world rankings over the last few years, has been down to a string of consistent results on the European Tour. And his swing is very unique and it makes him stand out from many of his counterparts, with the way he positions his body at the top of the backswing. Now many golfers and many top professional golfers now, turning to the backswing, keeping the right knee nice and flexed, loading the weight just on the inside, while keeping the body weight kind of central before moving the weight forward, turning the body and swinging through impact. Now what Pablo Larrazabal does is turn to the top of the backswing, and the right leg actually straightens quite significantly, loading a little bit more weight onto the left side. That causes the body just to tilt over to the left slightly, into this position.

Now from here one of the big problems of getting into this position normally is that weight would transfer itself backwards in the downswing, and the whole motion would be a flick off up into the air. What Pablo does very, very well, is he keeps his weight forwards, whilst turning very, very hard, and that keeps him ahead of the ball at impact, striking down and through. Now as such, he strikes the ball very, very hard, takes massive time with his irons but he just hit the ball very, very well. So to repeat that motion, it’s the right leg straight, loading the weight left, then turning the hips hard out of the way, on the way down, whilst keeping the weight on the left side. Not an easy action to replicate but it does have big benefits when you’re striking the ball. So a little bit different to some of his contemporaries on the tour, but he’s certainly making it work for him, and he’s climbing up the world rankings.
