What Things Can I Do To Help Me Focus Better On The Golf Course? (Video) - by Natalie Adams

What three things can I do to help me focus better out on the golf course? Well focus just really means that all your attention is on the task in hand. And the task in hand is playing golf, and is getting you to get the ball from the position it’s in to the position you need it to be in for the next shot getting the ball around the course as efficiently as possible. So what are the three things that you can focus on then to help you improve your focus?

Well the first thing is to learn how to switch on and off with your concentration; you need to make you’re in the present when you’re playing your golf shots and when you’re in between playing your golf shots. So a great tip to help you make sure that you are more aware of what is going on right here and now, rather than thinking about the past or worrying about the future is I would just listen to three sounds that you can hear. So as you walk in between golf shots try and pick out three sounds that you can hear on the golf course. Once you’ve done that now tell yourself three things you can see on the golf course, and that will make sure that you are in the present, so you’re then able to focus on the task I hand which is now, what do I need this ball to do? You won’t be remembering all shots when you’ve made mistakes, or you won’t be worrying about what might happen when you hit this shot and if you make a mistake then. So stay present. The second thing I’d say is to make sure you pick a specific target. So when you go to play your shot, before you play it stand behind the golf ball, look at where you want to hit the ball to, and draw a line from the target to the ball. Now rather than just saying to yourself oh I’ll hit it up the fairway, focus on something much more specific than just the fairway; it’s a big area. The smaller you can make your target, the more accurate your focus will become. It’s a bit like throwing at a dart board, if you were going to throw at a dart board to get a dart into a dart board, you’d throw at the bull’s eye, because if you miss the bull’s eye, you hit the bigger target. And your focus here needs to be hitting the target from here, up into that area, either up the fairway or on to the green. So the smaller the more specific the target is, hit at that, because if you miss that specific target you’ll still hit the bigger target of either the fairway or the green. So what I would do is start to focus on maybe the branch of a tree that I’d want to hit the ball at, so something very specific or a shape in the top of the trees, or maybe a cloud that I could see if it wasn’t a particularly windy day, so something very small. Okay so the third thing that we do to help you improve your focus is then to commit to the decision that you’ve made. Don’t start to worry about if it’s the right decision and if it’s going to come off or not, it’s not about whether it’s the right decision, once you have picked a particular club once you’ve decided on a particular target and a particular shot then just step in to play that – play the golf ball with that commitment to that shot. It doesn’t matter if it’s the right decision or the wrong decision, it’s the fact that you commit to that decision. If you work on those three things your focus should really improve when you are out on the golf course, and you’ll start hitting better golf shots and shooting lower scores.
