What Causes a Golf Pull Hook Shot? (Video) - Lesson by PGA Pro Pete Styles

Here’s a question for you. What causes a pull hook off the tee with your golf ball? The first thing we need to understand is what does a pull hook mean by definition? So, pull is generally considered to be a ball that sets off left and hook is a ball that bends from right to left in the air – these is all for the right-handed golfer, ball bends right to left in the air and then misses the target. So, ball sets off left and then bends further from right to left in the air missing the target.

Now, what we understand that the clubface direction, the clubface position is going to cause a majority of the balls initial flight. So, if my ball is pull hooking, I’ll just turn around this way. Pull hooking left turning left. If my ball is setting off left, it would stand to reason that we understand the clubface would be close to target. So, the club is aiming left of the target line. Now, also, we understand that the ball is then going to hook. So, it’s going to set off left and then it’s going to hook further left. Now, that must mean that the swing path is right off the clubface line. So, the clubface is left and the path is right. That’s going to send the ball off down the left hand side but rotating like a drill but more so – more down the left hand side. So generally considered that would be a swing path that’s coming slightly from the outside line but with a clubface, it’s aiming even more left than that, even more down the left hand side. Now, generally speaking, that’s actually going to be caused by a combination of a bad grip and a bad swing path direction. So, if we can work on improving the grip and the swing path direction, we can get rid of that pull hook. Now, if you’re not sure whether you are hitting pull hooks, the best thing to do would be to hit a series of shots to a target, but also have an intermediate point about 50 yards ahead of you, and just consider whether your ball goes left or right of the 50 yard target. And then what it does after the 50 yard target to get up to the final target. If it’s setting of left of the initial target then bending steeply to – more to the left hand side, you’re pull hooking it. That means your face is very close to target and your path is slightly right of your face angle. That’s left curving more left and that’s what’s causing your pull hooks.
