Callaway Odyssey O-Works Red #7 Putter Review

The Callaway Odyssey O-Works Red #7 Putter retails from $199.99 (MSRP) and it makes for a modified mallet featuring weighted alignment wings, the revolutionary Microhinge Face Insert, a double bend shaft, a full shaft offset, sole weighting and, last but not least, a new color scheme (hence the name Red) to expand the company’s O-Works lineup. The most important feature of the Callaway Odyssey O-Works Red #7 Putter is the Microhinge Face Insert, which arguably makes for the best-ever Odyssey created so far. In terms of design, the Red #7 boasts a straight red finish and a black sole. The black/red color scheme looks really cool and bold, and it clearly makes a statement. Now, as per the technology inside, it goes without saying that the hybrid Microhinge Face insert, being one of the best on the market today, is very different from regular inserts.

Many players are complaining about synthetic inserts in a putter influencing sound and feel. A number of “anti-inserters” argue that the sound is puffy and there’s not enough feedback/response. However, the Microhinge Face Insert plays in a league of its own, and I must admit Odyssey really hit the sweet spot with this baby. The new hybrid face-insert in the Callaway Odyssey O-Works Red #7 Putter is soft, yet comes with a cool sound at impact and a touch more response, making for the perfect compromise between performance and feel, the best of both worlds so to speak. And speaking of performance, playing this putter you’ll see how the little hinges inside the Microhinge face actually help the ball to roll with instant topspin. Long story short, it really works the way it’s supposed to. A proper squared stroke will always end up in a pure roll with the Callaway Odyssey O-Works Red #7 Putter, and you can take that to the bank. Also, Callaway’s R&D department kept the classic fanged head in their Odyssey O-Works Red #7 Putter, which translates into total control and great balance. If you’re looking for pure roll, soft feel and a bold looking piece of golf gear, the Callaway Odyssey O-Works Red #7 is definitely worth a look.
