Born Thomas Elliott Byrum, in Onida, South Dakota, in 1960, Byrum went on to study at the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University after high school. He turned professional in 1984 and went on to play in more than 500 tournaments on the PGA Tour. From these appearances Byrum achieved one win, at the Kemper Open in 1989. Over the years Byrum has finished in the top 10 at majors on two occasions. He finished in a tie for 8th place at the US Open in 2002 and in 9th place at the PGA Championship at Winged Foot in 1997.
Byrum isn’t the only member of his family to play the sport. His brother Carl is also a former winner on the PGA Tour.

As of the end of 2014, Byrum had achieved one win on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $6,554,698.
