Hoffmann played golf at the Oklahoma University for two years before deciding to turn pro in 2011. He had a successful amateur career, being ranked as number one in the world in 2009. He played on the victorious Walker Cup team in 2009 and also played in the Palmer Cup that year. Hoffmann played 13 times on the Web.com Tour in 2012 and made the cut 12 times. He had seven top 10s including a runner-up finish at the Chiquita Classic after losing in a play-off to Russell Henley and a 3rd place finish at the season ending Tour Championship. Hoffmann would gain his first ever PGA Tour card after ending the year 19th in the standings.

Hoffmann played 20 times in his rookie season, making the cut on 11 occasions. He registered three top 10s including a best result of tied 5th at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. He would end his rookie year 96th on the money list. Despite playing in twelve more events the next season, Hoffmann only managed two top 10s, a tie for 9th at the first FedEx Cup play-off event, the Barclays and a tie for 3rd place at the BMW Championship after shooting 62-63 over the weekend. His strong finish to the season meant a career best finish in the FedEx Cup at 26th in the rankings. Hoffmann has made two top 10s so far in 2015 and had the halfway lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard but had a disappointing weekend to finish the week in 4th place. His best finish in a Major Championship to date came at the US Open in 2015 when he finished in a tie for 27th.
