After playing college golf at the University of Arizona, Springer turned pro in 1988. On his first season on the Nationwide Tour in 1990, Springer won three times. Wins at the Bakersfield Open, Reno Open and El Paso Open brought Springer to fourth place in the standings and winning his first ever PGA Tour card as a result.

He played 28 times in his first season on the Tour, making the cut on 17 occasions. He had a total of three top 10 finishes with a best result coming at the BellSouth Atlanta Golf Classic where he finished in a tie for 3rd place. He would end his rookie season 91st on the money list. The following season, he came close to winning the Kemper Open but ultimately finished in a tie for 2nd place behind Bill Glasson. Springer had the best season of his career in 1994 when he won his first and second Tour titles. The first win came at the Kmart Greater Greensboro Open where he won the title by three shots. This was his first of two Tour wins for Springer. His second (and last) Tour win came shortly after at the Greater Milwaukee Open where he shot a final round of 67 to beat Loren Roberts by a single shot. He would have a total of five top 10s that season and would end the year a career best 13th on the money list.

Springer would play consistent golf for the next few years but never came close to winning again. He lost his full card after the 2000 season and had partial status on the Tour until 2006. His best finish in a Major Championship was a tie for 24th at the 1994 British Open. He will shortly become eligible for the Champions Tour.
