    After playing college golf at the University of Nevada, Allen turned pro after graduating in 1984. He played on the European Tour for a few years at the start of his career. His first and only European Tour win came at the Scottish Open in 1989 when he closed with a sensational final round of 63 to win by two shots from Ian Woosnam and Jose Maria Olazabal. He played on the PGA Tour on and off for a number of years but never won. He had three runner-up finishes in his PGA Tour career and has played in 379 Tour events. He won once on the Nationwide Tour, in 1998 at the Greater Austin Open. His best finish in a Major Championship was a tie for 12th at the US Open in 2001.

    Allen received an invitation to play in the Senior PGA Championship in 2009 as a result of his position on the career PGA Tour money list. He ended up surprisingly winning the event on his Champions Tour debut beating Larry Mize by two shots. This was the start of a successful career on the Tour. He won twice in 2012, 2013 and 2014 to bring his total of Tour wins to seven. He best finish on the Champions Tour money list came in 2012 when Allen finished 3rd in the rankings after having twelve top 10s including two wins, two runners-up and two 3rd places.
