Teater has a good college career at Morehead State University, winning one tournament. After graduating in 2001, he turned pro. He plied his trade on the various mini Tours in the United States for a number of years. He played his first full season on the Nationwide Tour in 2009. He finished 7th in the standings to gain his first ever PGA Tour card. He won once (at the Utah Championship by an emphatic four strokes), he finished runner-up at the Christmas in October Presented by Kansas City Crusaders and also has a 3rd place finish.
In his rookie season on the main Tour, Teater played in 31 events, making the cut on 19 occasions. He had two top 10s with his best result coming at the Turning Stone Resort Championship where he finished in a tie for 3rd. Teater ended his rookie year a comfortable 89th on the money list.
He played consistent golf over the next couple of seasons, finishing 110th in the 2011 standings and 98th in the 2012 standings. He had his best result on Tour to date in 2014. He finished runner-up to Tiger Woods at the Farmers Insurance Open in what was his third event of the season. He added a further two top 10s to his record I 2013 and finished the year a career best 65th on the money list. Teater lost his card after a poor 2014 season where he only managed a single top 25 finish, a tie for 23rd at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. He ended the season 164th on the money list. So far in 2015, Teater has split his time between both the PGA Tour where he is relying on invites and the Web.com Tour.
