    Lewis was born in Emporia, Texas, in 1960. His parents were both school teachers. From an early age, Lewis enjoyed sport. He played Little League between 1967 and 1973. He also began playing golf at the age of seven. Lewis played his golf at Emporia Country Club, where he triumphed in the ECC Men’s Club Championship on two occasions, before he had even graduated from high school. After high school, Lewis went to college at Emporia State University, on a golf scholarship. After completing his sophomore year, Lewis changed college, and began attending Southwest Texas State University. While studying at this university Lewis won the 1983 Division II golf championship. Lewis graduated from university with a bachelor of science in education.

    After university, Lewis participated in the PGA of America apprentice program, between 1982 and 1987. He turned professional in 1984. At this time Lewis worked as an assistant golf pro at The Hills of Lakeway Golf & Country Club. He moved to work as an assistant pro at the Las Vegas Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1988. That same year, Lewis qualified for the PGA Tour.

    Lewis became a golf pro at Forest Creek Golf Club in Round Rock, Texas, between 1990 and 1993. After achieving some success on the PGA Tour, Lewis earned a place on the Champions Tour in 2010.
    Lewis has put his love of golf to use away from the course, writing books containing numerous golf tips.
    As of the end of 2014, Lewis had achieved two wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $7,480,273.
