    Snead was born in Hot Springs, Virginia in 1940. He is the nephew of legendary golfer Sam Snead. Snead attended college at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. After leaving college he played pro baseball in the Washington Senators farm system, before he made the change to become a professional golfer in 1964. In 1968, Snead joined the PGA Tour. 

    Although Snead never won a major championship, he did win eight tournaments on the PGA Tour, four tournaments on the Champions Tour and one tournament internationally. Snead was also a member of the US Ryder Cup teams in 1971, 1973 and 1975. He was one of the most consistent players of the time, earning more than $7 million over his career.

    As a result of all his success, Snead was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
    Away from golf, Snead is an avid hunter, and also enjoys farming. He is a father, having one son Jason who was born in 1978.
