Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1958, Rummells grew up in West Branch, before attending college at the University of Iowa, where he continued to play golf. After leaving college, he turned professional in 1981.
Rummells first began playing on the PGA Tour in 1886, and continued playing on the Tour until 1994, during which time his best performance was a second place finish at the Buick Invitational of California in 1993. Rummells also achieved two top 10 finishes in a major, at the PGA Championship, in both 1989, when he finished fifth, and 1988, when he finished sixth. After this time, Rummells spent the next twelve years playing on both the PGA Tour and the Web.com Tour, which at the time was known as the Nike Tour. While playing on the Nike Tour he won at the Nike South Carolina Classic in 1996 and the Nike Knoxville Open in 1997. In 2008, Rummells turned 50 and began playing on the Champions Tour.
As of the end of 2014, Rummells had yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $1,909,430.
