Texas native Stroud, played golf while studying at Lamar University. During his time at college he was two time All-American. He also won the North and South Amateur in 2003, and played on the Palmer Cup team in 2004, during his amateur career.
Stroud turned professional in 2004, but didn’t play on the PGA Tour until 2007, after earning his card at qualifying school. For the first two seasons Stroud didn’t finish high enough on the money list to automatically qualify, but he did qualify via qualifying school on both occasions. The situation changed in 2009, when he automatically retained his card, having finished in 113th place on the money list. In 2010 Stroud won $237,500 when he tied for 10th at The Players Championship. Three years later he achieved his best PGA Tour finish, when he finished second at the 2013 Travelers Championship.
Away from the course, Stroud has diverse interests. He collects wine, and he enjoys skiing.
As of the end of 2014, Stroud was yet to achieve a PGA Tour win, but had amassed prize money of $8,271,552.
