Collins was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and went on to study at Methodist College from where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. While he was at college Collins won three individual NCAA Division III Championships, and was All-American four times.

After turning professional in 2001, Collins first played on the Hooters Tour, where he won once in 2002, and once in 2003; both times the win was at the 'First City Championship,' in Savannah, Georgia. Collins moved from the Hooters Tour to the Nationwide Tour in 2005, and won the Henrico County Open that year. In 2007 Collins finished in 23rd place on the Nationwide Tour money list, and earned his PGA Tour card for the following season. He remained on the PGA Tour for just one year before returning to play on the Nationwide Tour. The switch between tours continued the following season, after Collins finished in second place on the Nationwide Tour money list, and earned a return to the PGA Tour.

While 2010 was a reasonably successful year, and Collins retained his place on the PGA Tour, 2011 was plagued by injury for Collins, and was cut short as a result. As a result Collins played 2012 between the PGA Tour and the Web.Com Tour, and failed to retain his PGA Tour card.

After returning to full health in 2013 Collins made the cut in 12 of the 20 events he entered on the Web.com Tour. This included three occasions when he tied for third place. At the end of the season Collins finished in 25th place on the money list and regained his PGA Tour card for 2014.

As of the end of 2014, Collins was yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed prize money of $1,777,323.
