Baird was born in Miami Beach, and played golf from a young age; following in the footsteps of his father Butch Baird, who played golf professionally. Baird was a varsity player from the 7th grade at Miami Country Day. After school, Baird first attended Georgia Tech, but then transferred to Valdosta State University. While at College he triumphed in the NCAA Division II individual golf championship, in both 1994 and 1995.

After leaving College, and turning professional in 1996, Baird competed on what was then the Buy.com Tour and has since been renamed the Web.com Tour. Since then Baird has commenced playing on the PGA Tour, although he lost his Tour card after playing a very poor 2005 season. His 27th place finish in the FedEx Cup in 2008 meant that he automatically qualified for the PGA Tour the following year.

Baird is perhaps best known for having an unusual style of putting which actually began as a drill and he then just automatically adopted.

As of the end of 2014, Baird is yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but has amassed total prize money of $13,251,179.
