Bateman was born in Monroe, Louisiana, and went on to pay golf while at Louisiana State University, from where he gained a degree in marketing. After leaving College, Bateman began playing golf professionally in 1996. He spent the initial years of his professional golf career playing on the Nationwide Tour, from 1997 to 2001. In 2001 he finished in joint 32nd place at qualifying school which earned him a place to play on the PGA Tour the following year. He won on the Tour for the first time in 2007, at the Buick Open. The 2009 season was a poor one for Bateman on the PGA Tour, and he lost his playing rights, meaning that he again commenced playing on the Nationwide Tour.
Away from the golf course Bateman is a family man, and lives on St. Simons Island Georgia with his wife, and their son. Bateman and his wife are both wine enthusiasts, and they often travel to visit the vineyards of California. Bateman also have a love of food, and is a fan of TV cooking shows. In the world of sport, Bateman is a fan of LSU football and also follows the Atlanta Braves in baseball.
As of the end of 2014, Bateman had achieved one PGA Tour win, amassing total prize money of $3,869,324.
