Texas born Bryant is the son of a Baptist pastor, but his passion was always for golf. Although he attended the University of New Mexico, he turned professional before his graduation, qualifying for the PGA Tour in 1976. It was twenty years before Bryant, who was by then aged forty, achieved his first win on the PGA Tour, at the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic in 1995. This win came after more than four hundred starts on the Tour.

After turning fifty, Bryant started to play on the Champions Tour, where he achieved his first win at the Toshiba Classic in 2006. The following year was Bryant’s best since he turned professional, when he finished in third place on the Champions Tour money list, and won the US Senior Open.

Bryant’s brother Bart is also a golf professional, and Bryant obviously admires him. He has listed one of his best moments in golf as being watching Bart win the 2004 Valero Texas Open, and has also listed Bart as his favorite athlete.

Away from golf, Bryant has close links with the Florida Baptist Children's Homes Uniting Hearts Fund which helps to find secure homes for orphaned children. Bryant donated ten per cent of his winnings to the organization in 2012.

As of the end of 2014, Bryant had achieved one win on the PGA Tour, amassing prize money of $3,558,803.
