Gates was born in Gainesville, Florida where he also attended F. W. Buchholz High School, and joined the golf team, having been tutored in the game by his father since he was two years old. After graduating from high school, Gates studied at Texas A&M University, from where he graduated with a degree in agriculture.

After turning professional in 2008, Gates played on both the Gateway Tour and the Canadian Tour, on which he finished in twenty second place in 2009. In 2010, Gates joined the Nationwide Tour and triumphed at his first tour event, the Michael Hill New Zealand Open. After a relatively successful first season on the Nationwide Tour, Gates finished in sixteenth place on the money list and earned his card for the PGA Tour the following season. Gates did not finish high enough in his first PGA Tour season to retain his card, but he was successful at qualifying school for the next couple of seasons, which meant he could play on the PGA Tour. An unsuccessful Tour season in 2013/2014 meant that he lost his tour card.

Away from the golf course Gates is heavily involved in helping cancer charities and with his local church. He enjoys travelling, and lists his favorite destinations as Hawaii, California and Scotland.

As of the end of 2014, Gates was yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, having amassed prize money of $1,573,094.
