Following a successful amateur career when he represented England boys and the Great Britain and Ireland Team, Johnston turned professional in 2009. 2011 was a particularly successful year for Johnston after he played in his first European Tour event at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa. He followed this by qualifying for the Open Championship; his first major. His successes led to him qualifying for the Grand Final. He finished joint third and secured a place on the 2012 European Tour. Since then Johnston has gone on to compete in the Challenge Tour, experiencing his first win at the Scottish Hydro Challenge in 2014. The whole season was a successful one for Johnston, on the Challenge Tour. He achieved his eighth top ten finish as the season ending Dubai Festival City Challenge Tour Grand Final.
When he isn’t playing golf, Johnston is a fan of sports in general. He particularly enjoys basketball and soccer. As a break from the world of sport his interest also wanders into the world of cartoons.
As of 2014 Johnston has played one event on the PGA Tour. He was yet to experience a win and has not amassed any prize money.
