    Waverley Country Club COURSE Review

The Waverley Country Club is one of the oldest in the United States and definitely the center of the golfing-universe in its home state Oregon, as it was first opened for players way back in 1896, being synonymous with the most respected traditions of the game. The golf course at the Waverley Country Club is historic and beautiful, as it sits on an epic 130 acres of real estate, a majestic piece of land located on the banks of the Willamette River. During its long history, the golf course at the Waverley Country Club was host for no less than six USGA championships, the Blyth Tournament in 1897, the earliest US International Golf Match and more recently, for the Lewis & Clark Century Golf Tournament 1905 & 2005.

Being one of the oldest golf clubs in the West, the Waverley Country Club was first designed by an amateur, both in terms of golf and golf-course design, Chandler Egan respectively. He worked continuously on it for almost a quarter of a century, whilst one hundred years later, the Waverley Country Club suffered a major renovation under the supervision of architect Gil Hanse, who managed to restore Chandler Egans work including the design subtleties which had almost disappeared during the courses impressive life-span. Gil Hanse kept the courses characteristic blind shots and its classic bunkers, totally reinstating 35 of them and recrafting the rest. The greens are now faster than ever and the putting surfaces were modernized and enlarged. Gil Hanse even thinned out the treeline which was missing in Chandlers design in order to restore the beautiful river views. The new Waverley golf course boasts 6748 yards from its tips for a 71 par, with a course rating of 72.8 and a slope rating of 135.
